Unfortunately, homebirth is not integrated into our medical and insurance systems and due to this, most people are forced to pay out of pocket for this service, rendering midwifery and homebirth services financially inaccessible to a large portion of families. In an attempt to allow families of varying resources to access midwifery care and homebirth, Homebody Midwifery offers our services on a sliding scale based predominantly on family income. Please read through the entirety of this page before placing your family at a specific tier.
Homebody bases our sliding scale off of each county we serve’s own average median income (AMI) charts. To find your price tier, please first select the link for the county in which you reside, then locate your family’s income in relation to the current number of household members and find your AMI (Average Median Income). The number of household members should include all adults who contribute to your family in any way (not only financially) and all children who are already earthside, but not the unborn child.
For SF and Alameda Counties, please use the San Francisco Area AMI chart below
San Francisco Area Median Income (AMI) chart
Homebirth / Hybrid Fee:
• Under 80% AMI: $5,000
• 80%-120% AMI: $7,000
• Over 120%AMI: $9,000
*Please note that the above fee reflects our basic package that includes a mix of office and home visits. We charge an additional $750 for an all home visit package
We recognize that this isn’t a perfect system, please use these charts as a guide. We understand that many factors play into each of our complex financial situations and this tool may not work perfectly for yours. Please reach out for payment plans, information on insurance coverage, and other creative solutions. Please also reference The Green Bottle, a tool below, created by Alexis J. Cunningfolk for further context.
We do not ask for any type of income verification but rather trust our clients to select the fee that best fits their financial ability. While assets are not taken into account the AMI charts on this scale, please consider your overall wealth, ie homeownership, investments etc. while locating your family on this scale.
Please be mindful that if you locate yourself at a lower tier fee but in reality have the ability to afford a higher tier fee, you are limiting access to those families who truly need financial flexibility.
One final note from your midwives: Please consider that Homebody is a small business that is owned, operated, and staffed by us few midwives. We are very proud to offer a sliding scale and hope to continue to dismantle barriers to accessing midwifery care. In order to continue offering this, we need to be able to sustain ourselves financially as well. We deeply appreciate your engagement around this subject and look forward to supporting your growing family.
Warmly,
Homebody Midwives
