Why have a midwife in your Home birth?

When planning a home birth, having a midwife is crucial for a safe and positive birth experience. Labor and birth initiates and progresses smoothest when and where the birthing person feels the most safe. For many people, that feeling of safety that allows them to open is found inside their home. Homebody’s Planned Homebirth services include all in-home prenatal, labor, birth, and postpartum care.

Our midwives have extensive training and experience in supporting natural childbirth, trained to identify and address any potential complications that may arise during the birth. In addition to the safety and medical expertise that a midwife provides, there are many other benefits of having a midwife during your home birth. Midwives prioritize a natural and holistic approach to childbirth, which means that we work to create a calm and supportive environment that promotes relaxation and trust. We also prioritize the empowerment of the birthing person, providing education and support to help you make informed decisions throughout the birthing process.

Ultimately, having a midwife for your home birth is an investment in your health, safety, and peace of mind. Our midwives would be honored to support you and help you achieve the safe, empowering, and positive home birth experience that you deserve.

Prenatal Care

Prenatal care is where the depth and intimacy we lean on in birth is cultivated. At-home prenatal appointments are about an hour long. You will have alternating visits with our three midwives in order to build relationship and trust throughout care.  We will schedule visits every 4 weeks up until about 28 weeks, every 2 weeks from 28-36 weeks, and weekly from 36 weeks until your baby is born.

Labor and Birth

Two of our midwives will be on call for your birth on any given day. One of our midwives will arrive at your home when you are in active labor. They will intermittently monitor the health of you and your baby throughout the birthing process and the immediate postpartum period. A second midwife from our team will arrive towards the end of your labor to assist.

Postpartum care

Postpartum care is the gem of the midwifery model of care. Our midwives make sure that you and your babe will be tended to and cared for the first 6 weeks. One of our midwives will make home visits on day 1, day 3, around 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 6 weeks postpartum.

What to expect:

  • In-home blood draws and cultures for indicated blood work.
  • Nutrition and lifestyle recommendations from a holistic perspective.
  • Comprehensive health assessment of you and your babe at every visit.
  • Prenatal, birth, and postpartum education and referrals.
  • Psychosocial and emotional check-ins to hold space for all the shifts that are part of pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
